How to choose artificial florals for a wreath or arrangement

The six things that decide whether a floral looks right on the base, the way Brian explains them on a live.

Match stem length to the base

Stems here run 12in to 43in. For a 24in grapevine or work wreath, 18–26in stems cut down cleanly; 30in and longer branches suit door swags, tall arrangements, and centerpieces. The length is the first thing in every title.

Stems, sprays, bushes and picks are different tools

A stem is one flower on one wire, for focal blooms. A spray branches into several smaller heads and adds movement. A bush is several stems joined at one base and is the fastest way to fill a wreath. A pick is short, for tucking into deco mesh, swags and small containers.

Read the x-number before you order

“x3” or “x6” is the number of stems or blooms on one piece. The price is per piece, not per bloom, so a x3 ranunculus at $7.50 is three ranunculus on one base.

Pick the material for where it will live

Silk and fabric petals for everyday designs; velvet and lace-edge for fall and Christmas; Real Touch latex or foam (tulips, peonies, magnolias) for arrangements seen up close. Wired stems bend and cut with wire cutters; the product page says when a stem is not wired.

Build in odd numbers

Three or five of a focal flower reads as natural; two or four reads as symmetrical. Pair each focal bloom with a filler such as waxflower, thistle or berries, then finish with greenery.

Buy for the design, not the box

Everything is sold by the piece, so a single wreath can use two roses, one hydrangea spray and one waxflower without buying a case. Shipping in the continental US is a flat $11 however many stems you add.

Lengths run from about 12 inches for picks to 40 inches and over for blooming branches, and every title starts with the length. Most stems have a wire core, so they can be cut with wire cutters, bent to shape and separated into sections. Where a stem is plastic or not wired, the product page says so.

 As a rule of thumb, three to five focal blooms (roses, peonies, hydrangeas, magnolias), two or three filler sprays (waxflower, thistle, berries, wildflowers) and a base of greenery. Use odd numbers of the focal flower and cut bushes into sections to spread them around the base.

Petals are silk-style polyester fabric, velvet or lace-edged fabric on the fall and Christmas lines, and latex or foam on Real Touch tulips, peonies and magnolias. Stems are plastic over a wire core. The material is listed on each product page.

Real Touch florals are moulded from latex or soft foam rather than fabric, so the petals feel and photograph like fresh flowers. They suit arrangements and centerpieces seen up close. We stock Real Touch tulips, peonies, magnolias and mixed bouquets.

Most artificial florals are made for indoor use. Some pieces hold up on a covered porch or behind a storm door, but direct sun fades fabric petals and rain damages velvet, glitter and Real Touch finishes. Check the individual product page before using any floral outdoors; only items described as UV-resistant are intended for sun exposure.

Shipping in the continental US is a flat $11. Alaska, Hawaii and Canada are a flat $30. Orders leave within 5 business days, and a second order placed within 24 hours of the first is packed and shipped with it at no extra shipping charge.

Returns are accepted for items that arrive damaged or when the wrong item was sent.
